Fire Department
The St. Joseph Fire Department proudly protects a population of 85,000 people living in the City of St. Joseph and three surrounding fire protection districts. The protection area covers nearly 70 square miles.

The St. Joseph Fire Department, formed in 1865, has a proud past and promising future. Four of the city’s fire stations were constructed at the turn of the 20th century and provide rich evidence of the department's history.

The department is comprised of nine fire stations, consisting of eleven companies, and staffs more than 130 employees in five divisions. The department provides first responder medical services to the citizens of St. Joseph and a large portion of Buchanan County.

The mission of the St. Joseph Fire Department is to provide the highest level of protection of life, health, and property to the public and the organization.

The men and women of the St. Joseph Fire Department value teamwork, honesty, dependability, persistence, and hard work, taking pride in and respecting each other, the department, and our city. Striving to be courteous and compassionate to each other and the citizens served.

Membership of the department is represented by International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 77, with whom the department partners to accomplish our mission and uphold and preserve our values.
